Upon completion of the course, the student should have the ability to:
Knowledge and understanding
- explain the importance of validity and reliability of the design of quantitative studies.
Skills and abilities
- demonstrate knowledge of different research designs with a focus on quantitative methods
- apply and argue for an appropriate design for a research study, which includes quantitative methods, based on its research question
- assess reliability and validity in relation to different quantitative research designs.
Judgement and approach
- reflect upon the selection of quantitative method in relation to research questions and aims.
Contents
- principles of quantitative research design in relation to internal and external validity, statistical validity, and concept validity
- critical evaluation of research studies in relation to design throughout the research process.
- co-design and co-production in research design
- mixed methods
Type of instruction
The course is comprised of lectures and seminars. The course is a web-based course.
The teaching is conducted in English.
Prerequisites
To be enrolled in the course the student should have 240 credits, 60 of which should be at the advanced level, including a thesis of 15 credits (or the equivalent).
Examination and grades
The course is graded Fail (U) or Pass (G).
The course examination is comprised of individually written papers and seminars. The course examiner is an associate professor or professor.

Course evaluation
The course coordinator collates and comments on the evaluation before submitting it to the Board of Research Education at the Research School of Health and Welfare at School of Health and Welfare.

Course is given on a part-time basis.

2. Students registered in research education at Jönköping University and other partner universities
3. Students registered in research education at another university
4. Other applicants: admission based on the number of credits (the applicants will be selected randomly in the case of equal merits).
