On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

• explain statistical terms in their own words
• use appropriate statistical terms when referring to discrete components and characteristics of a statistical analysis
• choose an appropriate statistical analysis method based on a given scientific question and the characteristics of the data at hand.
• explain the assumptions underlying statistical analysis methods.

Skills and abilities

• structure data material in an appropriate way for the chosen statistical analysis method
• perform statistical procedures with scientific accuracy
• accurately interpret the results of statistical analyses
• analyze the advantages and limitations of statistical procedures.

Judgement and approach

• appraise the strengths and limitations of the results derived through statistical analyses in context.

Contents

Statistical analyses applied in practice in the SPSS environment;
-hypothesis testing.
-parametric and nonparametric analysis methods.
-correlation analysis.
-analysis of variance.
-simple linear regression.

Type of instruction

The course is implemented through lectures, computer labs and seminars.

The teaching is conducted in English.

Prerequisites

The applicant must hold a degree at advanced level or passed course requirements of at least 240 credits including 60 credits at advanced level including a thesis of 15 credits (or the equivalent)

Examination and grades

The course is graded Fail (U) or Pass (G).

Examination of the course will be based upon an individually written paper and seminars.
The course examiner is an associate professor or professor.

Selection for admission:
1. Students registered in the third-cycle programme at Jönköping University.
2. Students registered in the third-cycle programme at another university.
3. Other applicants: admission based on the number of credits (the applicants will be selected randomly in the case of equal merits).
