Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Upon completion of the course, the student should have the ability to:
Knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate familiarity and broad knowledge of concepts, theories and frameworks used within health and care sciences
- demonstrate a deep understanding of how health is influenced by personal and contextual factors.
Skills and abilities
- critically reflect on and apply the definition/s of health
- critically reflect on and apply relevant concepts and theories within the field of health and care sciences to research
- critically evaluate and assess complex situations based on theories and frameworks within health and care sciences.
Judgement and approach
- compared critically evaluate possibilities and limitations of different theoretical standpoints in the study of health
- argue for advantages and disadvantages of transdisciplinary research perspectives
- critically reflect on practical implications of research on health and care.
Contents
- definitions of health, care and global health goals
- health and care theories
- social structures and inequalities in health and care based on age, gender, social class, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, and religion
- transdisciplinary research and its application for the study of health and care
Type of instruction
The course is comprised of lectures and seminars.
The course is performed every three terms, every other time on campus and every other time web-based.
The teaching is conducted in English.
Prerequisites
To be enrolled in the course the student should have 240 credits, 60 of which should be at the advanced level, including a thesis of 15 credits (or the equivalent).
Examination and grades
The course is graded Fail (U) or Pass (G).
The course examination is comprised of individually written papers, peer-reviewing and seminars.
The course examiner is an associate professor or professor.
Course evaluation
The course coordinator collates and comments on the evaluation before submitting it to the Board of Research Education at the Research School of Health and Welfare.

Course is given on a part-time basis
Selection for admission:
1. Students registered in the Research School of Health and Welfare
2. Students registered in research education at Jönköping University and other partner universities
3. Students registered in research education at another university
4. Other applicants: admission based on the number of credits (the applicants will be selected randomly in the case of equal merits).
