Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Upon completion of the course, the student should have the ability to:
Knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate familiarity and in-depth knowledge of social theories and approaches applied to the study of societal challenges in global and local perspectives
- demonstrate broad understanding of key concepts in the study of welfare processes and practices.
Skills and abilities
- critically reflect on the concept and theories of welfare in research within the field of welfare and social science
- critically reflect on and apply relevant social science concepts and theories to research within the field of welfare and social science.
Judgement and approach
- problematise different understandings of the concept of welfare in a global perspective
- critically evaluate consequences of various theoretical stands used to study societal challenges.
Contents
- welfare organising; sustainability, welfare in global and local perspectives
- welfare practices, interactions, relations, agency at individual, groups and societal levels
- institutions, organisations, professional identities, discretion, organisational learning
- social structures and inequalities with focus on age, gender, social class, ethnicity, sexuality, disability and religion
- interdisciplinary research and applied welfare research
Type of instruction
The course is comprised of lectures and seminars.
The course is performed every three terms, every other time on campus and every other time web-based.
The teaching is conducted in English.
Prerequisites
To be enrolled in the course the student should have 240 credits, 60 of which should be at the advanced level, including a thesis of 15 credits (or the equivalent).
Examination and grades
The course is graded Fail (U) or Pass (G).
The course examination is comprised of individually written papers, peer-reviewing and seminars.
The course examiner is an associate professor or professor.
Course evaluation
The course coordinator collates and comments on the evaluation before submitting it to the Board of Research Education at the Research School of Health and Welfare.

Course is given on a part-time basis
Selection for admission:
1. Students registered in the Research School of Health and Welfare
2. Students registered in research education at Jönköping University and other partner universities
3. Students registered in research education at another university
4. Other applicants: admission based on the number of credits (the applicants will be selected randomly in the case of equal merits).

Articles and book chapters corresponding to about 500 pages.
