Upon completion of the course the student should have the

• explain the organisation of the old age care system and the health care system in Sweden
• identify gerontological social theories and reflect their applicability on old age care
• demonstrate understanding of ethnic and cross-cultural dimensions in old age care.

• consider and evaluate the implication of developmental research on ageing for the design and evaluation of old age care systems
• analyze and evaluate the function of old age care systems and the health care systems in Sweden
• analyze and evaluate how the old age care system interact with the health care system in order to meet the aged population
• critically compare and evaluate old age care in different countries.

in order to

• demonstrate an understanding of how cultural differences between Swedish and international old age care affects the older individuals
• analyze and demonstrate an understanding of advantages and disadvantages in the Swedish old age care in relation to elderly care organization in other countries
• demonstrate an understanding of the importance of scientific knowledge for the organization of elderly care.

The course is comprised of lectures, group discussions and study visits.

The teaching is conducted in English.

General entry requirements and a degree of at least 180 credits within an education in medicine, nursing or social work including a thesis of 15 credits and 30 credits in the main subject (gerontology) at the advanced level (or the equivalent).

The course is graded A, B, C, D, E, FX or F.

The examination will be based on one individual paper and active participation in three group discussions.

An associate professor will be the course examiner.

Attendance is compulsory at all activities within the course.

The course is a compulsory course for students enrolled in The Nord Mag Master Program, in School of Health Sciences and partner universities. The course is also available for students with general admission requirement. One week of full-time study is equivalent to 1,5 higher education credits and comprises a minimum of 40 hours of study.
