Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Upon completion of the course, the student should have the ability to:
Knowledge and understanding
- give details of pathophysiology, symtoms, diagnostics and treatment of common psychiatric health conditions
- in regard to failing mental health, give details of and explain the mechanisms of action, effects, uses and side effects of medical treatment
- give details of nursing in cases of mental health problems.
Skills and abilities
- discuss and problematise the consequences of co-produced nursing in relation to mental health problems.
Judgement and approach
- reflect on and discuss how own approach and care environments affect meetings with patients and relatives
- reflect on stigmatisation in connection with mental health problems
- identify and discuss ethical dilemmas that can arise in nursing in connection with mental health problems.

- Psychopathology, treatment methods, pharmacology and care in:
- psychosis
- neuropsychiatric disorders
- anxiety and sleeping disorders
- suicide
- bipolar disorder
- depression
- dependency problems
- The recovery process for:
- patients
- those close to patients
- care staff
- society
- Stigmatisation
- The situation and roles of those close to patients
- Theories, models and concepts in psychiatric care
Type of instruction
The course is implemented through lectures, seminars, study assignments and practical application at a clinical training centre (CTC).
The teaching is conducted in English.
Prerequisites
General entry requirements and successful completion of courses equivalent to 60 credits regarding basic knowledge in the field of nursing such as fundamentals of nursing and nursing in relation to general health problems. Students should also have basic knowledge in physiology and anatomy, microbiology, general pathophysiology and pharmacology as well as psychology.
Examination and grades
The course is graded A, B, C, D, E, FX or F.
Examination will be used upon written individual examination, seminars, written assignments, practical application exercises at CTC.
A university senior lecturer serves as examiner for the course.

Other information
The course is only eligible for international students coming to Jönköping University on shorter exchange than a whole semester.
